Yesterday, on Facebook, a friend from college asked me a question. He asked, “Do you ever take pictures of ugly people?” “All the pictures I see you post are of very good looking people.” I honestly did not quite know how to respond. I had to ask myself if I ever really did photograph ugly people. I thought about it for a while. All of my clients live in America, live in nice homes and many of their photographs center around joyous events–marriage, new baby, growing family, the pivotal high school senior year–my clients (and myself) enjoy a pretty awesome life and I get to participate with them by capturing those good times. The joy and the laughter and the enthusiasm for life are the kind of things I want to bring out in a client’s photograph.

So, do we ever photograph ugly people? No we don’t but…we photograph beautiful people in ugly situations. Some of you know that we shot our first wedding in 2004. The real spark for photography actually began prior to that wedding. It was on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic with Healing Waters, a nonprofit that brings water purification systems to third world and impoverished countries. Chris and our daughter, Mallory, will be going to Haiti next month to video and photograph another project for Healing Waters. There are plans for a second trip to Haiti later this year as well as a trip to Nigeria for a different water project. It is such a privilege to document these beautiful people living in such challenging conditions. When you toss that next half used water bottle or leave the faucet running, remember these folks, these beautiful folks that live in ugly conditions.

Julie

We are so excited to be shooting Lindy and Brian’s wedding next month. The ceremony will take place at a beautiful church in Arvada, Colorado and the reception will be held in Denver, CO at Mile High Station. Lindy is a Bronco’s cheerleader and this promises to be an over-the-top celebration. We could not be more happy for Brian and Lindy, such an awesome couple! We were able to get permission to do their engagement shoot in the Bronco Stadium (Sports Authority Stadium). It was a comical moment when the sprinklers for the field came on! You should have seen us run!
Enjoy…

I love the opportunity to sit down with a client, particularly if they are a bit nervous or camera shy, crank the music, get them feeling comfortable and then produce awesome, rocking images. We customize the shoot for corporate use, social media setting and model/acting head shots.

Here are a few recent headshots…

I want to share with you an amazing trip my family experienced after Christmas. We went to Anahauc, Mexico (about 4 hours south of the Mexican border) to an wonderful orphanage for 45 beautiful children. It is hard to believe that these precious children have had such painful and cruel backgrounds. All you see is their beautiful smiles. Our team did construction, cooking, cleaning, and delivered food to the needy in the town. Mostly, the team played with these precious kiddos. Somehow, the language barrier (especially for me) required us to use more body language. I am not sure I have ever had a week with more hugs. I feel that I was given more than I gave and loved more than I loved. To see the delight in their eyes and hear their laughter after we were able to give them Christmas gifts, gave us all such unspeakable joy. Here is a little taste…

Today’s photo assignment is a tough one…perhaps my toughest ever. So tough, I am procrastinating it by talking about it here on my blog rather than doing it. Today, I am editing images from a Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep session, taken by a talented professional photographer and friend of mine. In case you have never heard of it, MILMDTS is a non-profit organization that connects photographers and parents of babies that will not be leaving the hospital. These black and white images will often be the only tangible reminder of the baby these parents hoped for, dreamed for, and, sadly, will not be taking home with them. These images are emotionally charged. It is an emotional experience for the parents as well as the photographer.

I spoke with a friend about the tough assignment awaiting me today. I did not even know that this close friend had lost a child, stillborn at birth, 17 years ago. She said all she has is a small, poorly lit, out of focus image that she keeps in a special drawer and pulls out when she wants to remember this special child that never came home from the hospital. She told me about how important that image is to her and how she wished it was taken by a professional. It really hit me that God has given me gifts and talents that I usually use in times of celebration but that I am called now to use those same talents to help a set of grieving parents. It is a privilege and an honor.

I know this particular family to whom these photos will go to are going to have a pretty tough Christmas. Makes me think that we are surrounded by hurting people. Let’s do our best to include them, serve them and love them.

Julie
