Mothers of Preschoolers International — Teaching moms how to take better pictures…

Next Wednesday, December 15, I get the privilege of speaking at our local chapter of Mothers of Preschoolers International. The topic will be subject near and dear to my heart–photos. I remember wanting so badly to capture my child’s true personality and, then, as if on cue, the moment the camera came up, the cute moment turned south. Sometimes the smile turned into a fake grin or, more often than not, a battle scene ensued and the magical moment was lost. Unfortunately, when my kiddos were little, I was not a professional photographer and did not have the knowledge of lighting and composition that I have now. These moments are fleeting and you want to make the most of it. I love passing on what I know. Obviously, there is a time and place for professional portraiture and, of course, I hope everyone remembers me but, in the meantime, get out those digital cameras and take the best pictures you can with a few simple principles in mind. Sometimes you just get that magic moment in family photography that captures everyone’s personality. I love this image of this family. It is all in their expressions. Family photography reminds me just how much we are all changing. This is our third shoot with the baby and she changes so much in just three months that I can hardly recognize her. Just blink and these girls are in grade school, blink again and they are leaving for college. I guess that is why I love photography and feel it is such an absolute essential part of the family. These moments are fleeting and, if you are always the one taking the pictures, you are not in the shot. The really awesome part is that this photo will grow more and more valuable to this family over time, as the girls change and grow older. Just wanted to share this special moment with this family…

Help Portrait Event

We participated in the world-wide Help Portrait photography event on December 12, 2009. Thousands of photographers gave their time and talent to give the gift of free professional portraits to people who really don’t have the margin in life to afford them otherwise. We chose to work with six single mothers and their families. A couple of these families had not had a family portrait taken since their kids were born nine years ago. Other families said their only family photo was of an earlier time when the family dynamics were much different. It was a thrill to do this for these amazing women and their families!

Don’t for a minute think that this shoot was not cold…it was COLD! The entire family were such great sports. I think the temperatures were in the 30′s. It definitely takes some encouragement, positive thinking and some magic “warm up candy” to get great shots of families in this weather. My favorite shots below are between brother and sister. Sometimes happy accidents just happen. Chris and I had pretty much used our arsenal of “can’t-lose-gonna-make-’em-smile-tricks” and decided to just take a break inspite of the setting sun and falling temperatures, when something unexpected happened between brother and sister and got all of us giggling. This is just a sneak preview of some of our images and cannot wait to show the family the whole thing!

If you ever need a good travel agent (and trust me, grooms, you need one), you should really get to know Susan Hammond of Land and Sea Journeys. We booked our summer get-away to the Bahamas with Susan and it was truly a trip of a lifetime! When she contacted us about shooting her family, we were so excited as it had been years since their last shoot (in fact, I don’t think all three sons have ever had a shoot together). It was obvious to us that everyone had really outgoing personalities and a great way of relating to each other. It was a great bonus to have such amazing fall color!

If you don’t already know Emily, you have got to meet her. If you don’t already have a wedding planner, you have really got to meet her. This is Emily of Events by Emily. I first met Emily through some networking events concerning weddings. She is such a blast to be around, so when she contacted me about doing a shoot for her family, I knew it would be fun. Little did I know how much fun it would really be. When you see the kids running, don’t believe it was a jog-it was a full-on sprint and the hugs, well, they were more like tackle sessions. What a privilege to shoot such an awesome family!

Colorado Family Photography

We picked the perfect autumn day for this shoot. Actually, we were just really lucky because this shoot had been set up for three months. This was a special reunion of mothers, daughters and granddaughters and it was really exciting for us to be able to document the event. We did the session at Denver Performing Arts Center as they were attending Wicked later that day. It was especially fun for us as everyone was so into it and had such amazing expressions.
